Back to Comparison ChartFor men and women concerned about pattern hair loss, it is important to buy the best hair loss treatment product available. One of the better known hair growth product lines, Provillus, contains saw palmetto and the drug minoxidil. While much research has been conducted on minoxidil, and while some excellent research has been conducted on HairGenesis® --- which contains a uniquely potent form of saw palmetto --- we are unaware of any research specifically proving utility for the proprietary composition in Provillus against pattern hair loss, either in men or women. On the other hand, HairGenesis® is supported with published medical research specifically showing that our proprietary formulation actually works.
The Provillus product line consists of an ingestible oral supplement containing saw palmetto, stinging nettle, pumpkin seed and other substances, and a minoxidil-containing liquid to be applied to the scalp.

As advertised, Provillus appears designed to treat male pattern hair loss and hair loss in women. Provillus seems to rely on inferential and direct testimonials rather than formal scientific research. Because the Provillus line is based in part on the activity of minoxidil, Provillus points to research testing minoxidil for hair loss.
To our knowledge, there is no peer-reviewed published research supporting the proprietary admixture contained within the Provillus line in the treatment of pattern hair loss. Nor have we found any peer-reviewed scientific research testing Provillus in men experiencing hair loss or women experiencing thinning hair.
Minoxidil has been shown to offer benefit in stimulating hair growth in men and also women but the drug also comes with a list of potentially serious health warnings. The Provillus website also touches on this subject by stating several warnings such as: ..."Stop use and ask a doctor if chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness, or dizziness occurs." Moreover, in the absence of definitive proof, such as that which supports HairGenesis®, it may be difficult for any product line, including Provillus to substantiate that their proprietary product will actually prevent hair loss and/or thicken the hair.
Unlike the drug-based hair loss treatments, HairGenesis® has never been linked to negative side effects of any kind. Unlike the non-drug based hair loss products, HairGenesis® has been proven safe and highly effective under IRB-monitored, placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical research, as well as university-based formal research, now demonstrating a dual-mechanism of action against inflammation in the hair follicle and pathologic DHT. HairGenesis® is the only non-drug hair loss treatment formula supported with proven research published in the peer-reviewed medical and scientific literature (pubmed.com).

At the present time, January 2009, no non-pharmaceutically derived hair loss treatment is technically required by the FDA to undergo placebo-controlled, double-blind clinical research. Nor is such research required to be submitted for validation and publication by and within the peer-reviewed medical literature. HairGenesis™ has undertaken these difficult, costly and time-intensive steps in the interest of demonstrating, for the benefit of consumers, its safety and efficacy under the most scientifically objective and stringent conditions. Among the non-drug based hair loss treatments, in successfully achieving these milestones, HairGenesis™ stands alone. Product Names are the trademarks of the companies represented by those products.
